Night Harbour

Night Harbour was a site production that was directed by Louise Morris in 2017 around the focus of surrealism and dreamlike states. This production was performed at the Arts Centre Melbourne on Friday the 19th of May at 11:30am.

Everyone within the production was given a specific character that they maintained throughout the duration of the site performance. Kathy Pitropakis played the character of a clock worker alongside a group of clock workers whose job was to ensure the flow and rhythm of the dream like state.

Elaborate costumes and characters were developed to allow the performers to stand out from the crowd and bring the production of the Night Harbour to life. As this performance was site based and located in the CBD the ability to have a run through at the actual site was not an option for the performers. The actors had to be fully aware of their surroundings at all times while performing, they also had to be prepared to improvise when seen necessary to allow the performance to run through as smoothly as possible.

Kathy’s character of the clock worker had to appear working all the time, she had a pocket watch and a notepad to note down times and any issues that may have occurred in relation to the function of the dreamlike state.

A member of the public draped Kathy in a sunflower cloth that was on site of the production. The beauty of performances on site is people can unexpectedly add to the performance and it becomes even more unique.

The only time that the clock workers were seen not working was when the transition between morning and night occurred in the surreal depiction of the storyline.

The performers were required to work off each other, they had to be aware of not only what they were doing but what their co-workers were doing as well.
