Devising a Theatrical Production – Kathy’s Approach:
Step 1: Project idea and research
Stimulus material is gathered from a range of different sources. Brainstorming, research and further ideas are collected regarding the project. All ideas are welcome at this stage, nothing is right or wrong and the more ideas the more options to devising an interesting piece of work. Anything that comes to mind gets written down.
You can draw ideas from documents, photos/paintings, songs, feelings or anything else you decide. Our brains work in interesting ways, you sometimes get ideas you never expected, be open to the process as you never know where it can take you.
Step 2: Creating scenes
The material gathered is used to create hypothetical scenes. Through collaboration with other team members scenes are sketched/written out and workshopped on the floor. Workshopping allow for scene development, certain ideas are discarded and new directions forged. This is where trial and error occurs.
You start creating the direction in which the product will go until the production starts showing you where it’s heading. Whenever you create something from the ground up it will sooner or later take on a life of its own. You can end up in a direction you never originally intended.
Step 3: Rehearsal & Refinement Process
Fine tuning the project, listening to what it needs and making sure transitions and scene sequence is working harmoniously. Once the production is refined to a solid piece of work other aspects are introduced like lighting to enhance it further.
Step 4: Project Implementation
This is where all the hard work pays off. You have to trust the process and all the work you’ve put in to get to this stage. With any live production you must understand that things may not go as planned but that’s okay, embrace the unexpected, run with it. Remember “the show must go on”.
